What is the time control for chess in chess tournaments? How long do you have between chess moves? There is a standard time control for chess in tournaments, but there is no time limit for a single move. You just have to plan well so that all your moves fit into the time given.
All FIDE events have a standard time control for their chess tournaments. Each player gets 90 minutes to make all their moves (40 moves in all). Then they are also given an extra thirty minutes to complete the game.
90 minutes is the standard for a game of chess. But sometimes exceptions are granted to players, and there are World Championships that have lasted for 120 minutes for 40 moves. There are also games that lasted 60 minutes for 20 moves, with another 15 minutes to end the game.
Each game of chess is different according to where you play it. Sometimes the time specified is for the first 40 moves, and then another time slot is given to finish the game. Sometimes you may start with a certain amount of given time for the entire game, but you may get a few additional seconds (about 30 seconds) for each move.
Time limits are imposed in chess games by the use of chess clocks. The chess clock is actually two clocks in one. Each of the two clocks runs at a different time and works for each player. After every move, a player pushes a button that will stop their own clocks and start their opponent’s.
A player loses the game if the flag in their clock falls to indicate that they have not made the required number of moves within the time period.
In a classical game of chess, players must make 40 moves in one hour, then followed by 20 moves in one hour and then 30 minutes of sudden death. A game can last up to 7 hours.

Chess tournaments also allow ‘overtime’ or ‘bonus times’ after the said number of moves is completed within the said time. A standard game will have 40 moves in 90 minutes, then an additional overtime of 30 minutes extra.
